XWiki Seminar 2017

Here we are, reaching our 9th edition of our company seminar, getting the XWiki team members together in Romania for 7 days!

This year, we spent a great time at a location close to Bucharest, called Acacia Village, fully enjoying the nature, the on-site facilities and the tasty bio food!

The Seminar schedule included a mix of team status update sessions and other presentations, collective time, hackathons, HR and extra leisure activities! The people were encouraged to spend time within their direct team but also to get involved in cross-team actions!

We could not miss a trip day, which will surely stick to our memories because it took place during the only rainy day of the whole seminar week. emoticon_smile But the summer rain had its charm making the day even more memorable! emoticon_grin

We invite you to browse our photo album and get a glance of what happened this year at our seminar!

If you're curious about last year's seminar, just click here and let yourself carried away!

Why XWiki loved it at FOSDEM'17?

This past weekend, 4 and 5 February, Université Libre de Bruxelles was the place to be for the large free software community, gathered under the umbrella of the best European Open Source event: FOSDEM. Just like the years before, the event was a hit, bringing together the love for Open Source, belgian fries and, of course, local beers.

If you haven't attended FOSDEM before, the magnitude of the event can overwhelm you: 645 lectures, 8000+ hackers, 610 speakers, 669 events, and 55 tracks, around 70 company booths and countless Twitter posts. Just like one attendant wisely said: "It's a week long computer conference that takes place in one weekend.".

Then, there's the quality of the people attending and the knowledge gathered in the same campus. Keynote speakers like Brandon Philips, Stefano Zacchiroli, Roberto Di Cosmo, Bradley M. Kuhn and Gerolf Ziegenhain took over the stage on the two days of the event.

On Sunday, Ludovic, our CEO, raised awareness on the advantages and powerful advanced features of XWiki, and what makes it a competitive solution to Confluence or Microsoft Sharepoint.

You can enjoy his slides here and, below, this cool interview he gave to the Hacker Public Radio.

At the same time, our colleague, Ecaterina, was hosting a very interesting Open source Design panel. It was a full-house dynamic talk that everyone enjoyed, as you can see below.

The Wikis and CMS stand is growing to be a tradition for XWiki. This year we were neighbors with Jenkins and TikiWiki, and we must say, it was a pleasure to have such neighbours. Yet, we did not have the chance to enjoy their company too much, as our stands were very busy with people willing to learn more about us. We loved sharing knowledge on XWiki, CryptPad and our commitment to the Open Source community. After many interactions, demos and pitches, we can say the XWiki brand awareness increased substantially, and as usual, the operation “Tweet for #XWiki goodies” was a total success.

The XWiki team was proudly represented by 9 (out of 40) members of our team, and even though we did not manage to sync for a group photo (someone had to be at the stand, obviously), we happily attended this great event. We also thought of sharing a few of the talks we attended and found interesting, with videos included: Matthew Hodgson's Encrypting Matrix talk, the talks from the decentralisation room, Brabo Silvius' Frosted Embedded POSIX OS talk, Steffen Evers' On the way to a FOSS Platform for Cloud Based IoT Solutions talk and, of course, everything that went on in the design room.

On behalf of XWiki, a round of applause goes out to the organizing and volunteers team, the ones that have made this event a success. And on this note, we are more than excited to announce our presence for FOSDEM 2018. Who else will join us?

XWiki's FOSDEM participation announcement

We are pleased to announce that, in less than a week, we will be attending, speaking and networking at FOSDEM 2017, in Brussels.

The event will take place at ULB Campus Solbosch on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February 2017. You can find us at zone K, level 2, booth 6 - "Wikis and CMS" - between the booths of Jenkins and OpenNMS. The full schedule and list of stands are now available. The entry, just like any other year, is free and registration is not required.

On our behalf, Ludovic will tackle the subject of collaboration tools, between open source and closed source, with an in-depth comparison of such tools, in a Lightning Talk on Sunday, between 11:40 and 11:55, room 2215 (Ferrer).

Also, Ecaterina will disseminate the complex mission of designers in Open Source, specifically the matter of design feedback in these communities. You can enjoy her group talk Sunday, between 12:10 and 12:50, in room AW1.121 and from 16:55 to 17:00 in the Closing remarks for the Open Source Design room.

Looking forward to meeting you all and answer all the questions you might have about XWiki, CryptPad or our community. Until then, follow us on Twitter (XWiki and CryptPad) where we will keep you up-to-date with our latest developments.

XWiki Christmas 2016! Jingle All the Way!

Jingle bells, Jingle bells!
Jingle all the way!

It looks like Santa is a guru in using XWiki, otherwise I can’t imagine how he could structure and organize his database so efficiently in order to come and visit all the people from the GOOD LIST

Anyway, the French and Romanian teams were happy to wait for him in their cozy offices, near the Christmas tree. And you know what? The waiting wasn’t long, which means he found on his way only well behaved XWikiers emoticon_grin.

Like the previous merry holidays, this year all the XWikiers enjoyed good time together decorating the office, remembering happy moments from the past while serving the Christmas dinner together aaaand...guess what?! Secret Santa came again with more creativity, inspired gifts and lots of fun!

We thank our dear Santa for spreading a lot of happiness within XWiki and we will be waiting for him next year promising to be better and better!

We cannot end the year without remembering also how the XWiki Christmas 2015 was like!
And if you'd like to become part of the XWiki team and celebrate together the XWiki Christmas, see what place will fit you the best and come talk with us in 2017!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!

XWiki’s special Christmas theme

“Deck the office with pixels of holly, ‘tis the quarter to be jolly” We’re feeling merry emoticon_wink

Decorations, carols in the hallways, gifts, parties, leave days... December has fully taken over offices and working spaces around the world. Whether you’re full onboard or went full Grinch when the first signs of Christmas decorations hit the supermarkets (in November!), chances are that, by now, the Christmas spirit got you.

The holiday season is upon us, and that begs the question: what more can you as an employer/manager to keep your employees happy and motivated? Just like any other Christmas enthusiasts, we thought of contributing to this movement and have taken this spirit to the next level: a special Christmas theme for your company’s XWiki. This way => XWiki Christmas free demo.

We have joined forces with the design team at the North Pole, drafted versions, then got the elves, the snowmen and the reindeers to provide feedback, did the implementation, asked for Santa’s blessing and agreed that this is the perfect picture of the season.

Since we’ve been praising it so highly, here’s a sneak peek of how the theme looks and feels like:

Gather your team around the XWiki Christmas theme and go through this year’s holidays with a smile on every face, even if at work. We challenge you to show us the best use of our special theme, whether it’s a blog post, internal newsletter or anything you might think of.

Let’s make the most of these Holidays! - XWiki’s little helpers

Halloween 2016 at XWiki

XWiki goblins, ghosts and witches were invited to spook-tacular activities at the XWiki offices for celebrating together the 2016 edition of the Halloween!

A part of the team was locked in two escape rooms. While some joined their efforts in identifing the solutions to the traps made up by the psycho painter in the “New colors room”, others tried to save the nuclear power station from the “ Nuclear control room”. Once again XWiki people proved that they make a good team together and succeed to escape the rooms!

Another part of the team searched enthusiastically the murderer of Mr. Jack through the Mysterium boardgame, carved pumpkins and entered in the HR team's game wearing orange and black at the office!

This is how the XWiki Halloween 2016 looked like!

If you want to recall what happened last year, we invite you to explore our previous blogpost!

Employee Development - Easier than ever!

Employee Development is still an area that needs more investments from companies to ensure higher ROI and better performances. Supporting the employees in discovering their career paths does not only impact the individual, but also the organisation. Often perceived as a bureaucratic action, the consequences of poor employee training results in lost revenue and inefficient talent acquisition.

Your competitive advantages, from a HR point of view, are strictly related to the type of rough talent you have in your team. You can always use the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator to get a few insights on the psychological preferences of your employees in terms of team roles, but the necessity of polishing that rough talent is absolute mandatory. Nobody can expect a newly employed individual to reach the corporate objectives if he has no idea how to or has no support to do so. Therefore, at XWiki, we are very supportive when it comes to Employee Development.

Here are a couple ideas that we use:

Mentoring

It doesn’t matter what size your company is, the only important thing is your will to provide support to those newly employed individuals. Mentoring or coaching sessions are one of the best ways to know what are the key strengths of a new employee. Furthermore, it’s easier to communicate the expectations and explain the level of quality you are looking for when you interact on a one-on-one basis. You can schedule these sessions using the meeting extension.

The application offers a calendar view helping you to overview the entire week and easily manage the upcoming meetings. If you want to see more details about a particular session, you simply click on it and find every piece of information there is about it.

This is how we manage the meetings

On-boarding

We use on-boarding sessions to provide the new employees, the knowledge, the skills and the general feeling perceived as necessary to smoothly integrate. The HR department makes the general introductions, followed by a meeting with the department leader and the other colleagues.

This is the time when a new employee gets a deeper insight on the company's organisation, the way of working, internal rules, practical information, as well as on the expectations we have. We use the calendar view to be able to avoid any conflicts.

We use the calendar view to have an overview of the day, week or even month.

Technical training

As XWiki is a complex technical software, we need all of our employees to have a basic level of tech understanding. In order to understand the general activities each department performs, the employees are encouraged to participate to different training sessions (either training related to the tools that we use or the ones related to the XWiki solutions).

A detailed view of the meeting application is being use so that we can have a structured, time efficient meeting and check all the details concerning it.

Coping with a high amount of data that comes from the employee development process becomes easy with XWiki. The best solution is to drop the conventional ways and use the versatile character of XWiki.

By adding applications from the store or create our own with App within Minutes, we are able to efficiently store candidates’ information, meanwhile analysing the progress of the current employees.  We are glad to be able to take decisions based on solid facts which improves the quality of the work and the overall morale in the organisation.

Since the beginning, XWiki has been designed to satisfy a wide range of needs. The question is how do you use or plan on using XWiki to meet your HR needs?

Marketing Specialist @ XWiki

The XWiki Seminar 2016

All the XWiki team was involved last week in the 8th edition of the company seminar.

The XWiki Seminar 2016 was built around the Task Force - Commando theme and challenged the team members with several missions to successfully fulfil within a week!

After an active participation at the morning status sessions, demos and hackathons, all the forces were called together for several team missions: creating an unique symbol, identification sign for the team (the XWiki Coat of Arms), getting to know more about the personality, strengths and weaknesses through a test, building and flying paper aircrafts and creating quick, simple and tasty desserts to celebrate the accomplishments and the 12-year existence of the company. ...

Fosdem 2016: from behind the stand table

This year was a special year at Fosdem because, although I've been going to Fosdem for about 7 years or so, it was the first year that XWiki managed to be in the stands row, sharing tables in K building with other wiki and CMS projects: DokuWiki and Tiki.org.

So this year I've seen the Fosdem crowd from a different angle than usual, from behind the stands table, showing the XWiki software to people, explaining what it does and how it can help them. ...
