left quote

Curriki is a non-profit organization. Its mission is to remove the gap between people with access to high-quality education and people who don't have such access. Curriki created a website based on XWiki to support collaborative development and the free distribution of learning materials.

Context

Curriki wanted to make learning possible for everyone, everywhere in the world. The project started from the idea that technology can play a crucial role in breaking down the inequality barriers that prevent children from all over the world from accessing quality education. Having this in mind they created a website, the first and only website for Open Source Curriculum (OSC), which would:

  • Provide universal access to educational materials (different areas of interest from the primary and secondary education)
  • Allow all education actors to exchange information and connect to each other.

Why choose XWiki OpenSource?

  • XWiki is a unique combination of Wiki, CMS and community tools
  • To be able to leverage Java and other Sun technologies
  • The flexibility needed to discover long term requirements
  • The ability to apply custom metadata
  • The ability to apply fine grained rights and access privileges to wiki pages.

The solution

"There is really nothing like XWiki on the market. Many have parts of what XWiki provides, but few put them together in such an innovative way." (Kim Jones, Curriki Chairman and co founder and former Sun Microsystems Executive)

Curriki is a solution built on top of XWiki, dedicated for the Education use. The Curriki application was created by extending the XWiki core to meet the specific educational needs. More precisely it provides the following features:

  • Innovative multimedia asset contribution interface with meta-data assignement supporting Wiki, HTML, Flash, zip, video, audio and Sankoré (Digital Whiteboard Format)
  • Support for document models when publishing
  • Educational curriculum and asset viewing with an advanced content navigation table
  • Custom curriculum and asset Search based on the Lucene search engine
  • Advanced personal space (“My Curriki”)
  • Social Network and Group collaboration features including blog, messaging, wiki and curriculum sharing.

Curriki's code is open-source and published under the LGPL licence.
